What are you reading these days?
I’m four months into a one-year reading challenge and I’m extremely proud to tell you that I’m on track 😎
At the beginning of the year, I resolved to read one book a month. Yes, just one book. If you read my last post, you’ll know that this year is about little drops of water.
Now, if you’re a voracious reader, one book a month may seem like a drag, but if you often struggle to find the time to read (or you no longer even bother trying), then you know that’s it’s a hella hard to keep up.
Case in point, in February, I started with Caleb Azumah Nelson’s Open Water. It came highly recommended and I was super excited to dig in, but for some reason, I just couldn’t get into it.
One week to the end of February, I switched to Steal Like an Artist (this was essentially a cheat because it’s a small easy-to-digest book) and I still finished at past 12 am on March 1st. Lol, my resolution to never carry a book over to the next month has kept me on my toes. I love it!
Having said that, I should have learned my lesson, but in March, I also dragged my timeline till the 31st and wrapped up on Bad With Money at 11:40 pm. Practically midnight 🥲
Presently, I’m reading Selling 101, which was published in 2003 and offers an interesting perspective on how sales representatives navigated the turbulent waters of acquiring customers before the web 2.0 boom.
All these books are chosen at random, by the way, and as the spirit leads.
Anywayyyy, I really didn’t come here to update you on my reading streak, that monologue will be delivered in December when I hit my one-year milestone 💫.
The real reason I’m here is that I’m actually curious about what you (and perhaps your circle of friends) are reading these days.

Random thought: won’t it be fantastic for friends to have a group thread (not necessarily the group chat) where they share interesting things they read/discover?

But, I digress.
Besides books, I read a lot on the internet.
This morning, I read about how The Naked Convos, a Nigerian blog for unfiltered self-expression pivoted into a TV and film production company committed to telling “original African stories” through serial content.
I’m also 10% through an article on Stears Business which answers the question “what are the two things the Nigerian government must focus on?”
Scattered across 98 tabs on both Chrome and Safari (please don’t judge me, you’re probably guilty too), are articles on the economics of free shipping for direct-to-consumer brands, Big Cabal’s rise to a media behemoth, Bridgerton’s exemplary demonstration of true diversity and representation, the scepticism about the future of crypto by the man who created Ethereum, the radical friendship of two queer black writers — Lorraine Hansberry and James Baldwin, how the Smiley company built a retail empire, as well as Sonder and Tell’s newsletter on the importance of naming — an old favourite.
Whew! That was a mouthful, but that’s what I’m reading these days.
